This week’s Fun Monday is hosted by the fabulous Hula Girl.
She wants us to show her “those pieces of clothing you can’t seem to throw away, whether you wear them or not. It might be your grandma’s wedding dress, a jacket from high school, a t-shirt from an old boyfriend or those jeans you hope to get back into some day.”
Well if you’ve been around for a while you will know that the one item from my wardrobe that I adore, that defined me at a certain time of my life when I was learning who I was, was these…

My two tone cherry red Doc Martins.
I got them when I was 18. I lived in them (not literally, that would be weird and I would need to be very tiny and extremely minimalist in taste), but as in I wore them every day, no matter what.

This is me at 19 at my Auntie’s house in Wembury in Plymouth. (The very fabulous Auntie who came up this weekend.) It’s boiling hot, yet I am wearing opaque tights, short dress and my docos. This is a photograph of a photograph so you can’t see Mr B’s hair but he’s quite happy about that as it was kind of quiff-like in 1994. I love this photo. Myself, my sister and one of my brothers and his now wife were all down for the weekend and the weather was just amazing.
When ever I think of my docs I feel good. Sometimes I just sit and hold them, stroke the soft leather and remember good times. They make me purrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
NB. That last line was a bit of a lie, but if I was a cat then that is what they would make me do.
N.N.B. I am not a cat.
Check out the other Fun Monday participants here, they are fabulous.

Great title. I am impressed 18 years is a long time to have a pair of shoes. I love red shoes, but I have never owned red Doc Martins.

Wow, Jo….eighteen years with a pair of boots?!! That must be some record there, don’t you think? Way cool. Love the color.
Mine’s shared, but it’s kinda ‘corny’.

I saw this in my Reader earlier this morning but when I tried to come to comment, the post didn’t exist. So now I’m back to comment, buuuut I can’t remember what I was goona say. I know it involved my obsession with Birks but that’s about all.

High top shoes are good for all year around. The color will melt the snow in the winter.

Jo I love your boots and it is fantastic that you’ve still got them after all this time. I think the oldest thing in my wardrobe are boots that I wore on my honeymoon, 10 years ago…and before you start thinking that’s kinky, they were just fake suede ones from M&S…honest ;-D

I envy you such fondness for an article of clothing from your past. it means you have good memories and that is always a positive thing.

I wanted docs so bad when I was at school. They were a status symbol over here, as they were very pricey. About five times what my parents normally spent on a pair of shoes for me.
I also had wee little feet and when I tried on my friends’ they just flopped around.
I’ve often contemplated going out and buying a pair now that I can afford them (I is not poor no more), but feel funny about it for some reason.
If I do, they will be red.
Or maybe burgundy. I like burgundy.

My daughter in law got married in her red docs, with a red satin dress she had made!

LOVE the shoes! Made me remember a pair of hiking boots I wore when I went to England for a month; I felt so powerful in them; just replaced them a few years ago, but it was hard to let them go. Thanks for checking my blog out!

I had a pair of black doc martens in the early 90s too—I loved them as well. So comfortable. And looked so good with black tights!
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:22 pm
I bought my daughter Docs abouat 14 years ago…she still has them. They still look good with whatever one wants to pair them with. Love the red ones. If I had a pair, mine would be red, too.
June 23rd, 2008 at 4:19 pm
I came so close to pulling out my purple Nike hiking boots for the very same reason. I never owned any Docs though… I think I might have been too old (sigh).

I learn so much from Fun Monday people. Who knew that there were boots as cool as cherry red Doc Martins?? I can see why you didn’t want to take them off, even for summer photos. And yes, I agree–that’s a really great family photo. Glad everyone is still happy.
Trying to think what might be today’s fashion statement in shoes. Bet “not Kate” could educate me!
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Apparently not diamonds but Docs are your best friends, lol !
