Our host today is the lovely Olive. Having been away for the majority of the weekend I kind of forgot to write my post last night as I was a tired lady. In fact, I didn’t even look at the topic till this morning. When I did I thought, oh my Bob, because Olive wants our fishing stories and, well, apart from rock pooling which I loved as a kid and love doing with my kids now, I have never actually, truly, properly fished.

You see, I have a confession. Fish give me the creeps a little bit. There are several reasons this could be:

  • Their eyes
  • Their cold dead eyes at the fish market
  • The smell
  • The dead goldfish in my shoe when I was about eleven
  • The dead fish entrails on my kitchen floor brought to me by my old cat Myron (RIP)or
  • The dream where my brother ate a goldfish.

To be honest I think it was the last one. Shiver. I heard it crunch.

Sorry, I have to go be sick in a bucket.

But I will come and read your stories. I might heave a bit, but I’ll do it, for you.

my kids love the fish counter at the supermarket. It’s like fun part of the trip – they’re fascinated but kinda creeped out too! although I do push it a bit when I need to pull them into line at home and I’ll say “don’t hurt your sister, the monkfish won’t like.”

I actually love the taste of most fish but am much less keen on the smell it leaves~ my mother had salmon for lunch today and I’m still getting a whiff~ not pleasant!

Your friends are cruel! Suppose you do indeed like fish crackers? Now I guess that’s over with. You may not have fish stories but do have a very clever post title.

I really love eating fish but I can’t do it if it still has it’s parts attached (head, fins, operculum, etc.)
That makes me throw up in my mouth a little.

I have a strong phobia about seeing fish on the floor. Out of water. Flapping on the floor. Shudder.

When I went to Minnesota a few months ago I had smelt for the first time ever. I didn’t think I could do it, but I ate a whole plateful. Smelt is about the size of a goldfish, and they fry ‘em up whole, bones and all. There was a crunch for sure. Almost anything tastes good when you dunk it in batter and fry it in gobs of oil.

Love the title today! Sigh … it seems I consistently forget to write mine until Monday rolls around, so I often miss being on the visiting list. I’m curious about the goldfish in your shoe and relate to ‘unwanted gifts’ from cats. Great graphic at the end ;–)
    Hugs and blessings,

I went fishing a lot as a kid because my father went all the time—and was very good at it. I grew up eating fresh-water fish straight from various lakes—and eating it the same day ti was caught! To this day I cannot stand frozen fish.

The one part of fishing I never liked was putting the worm on the hook. I made my father and my brother do it. The poor worm!!

When I was at college there was a mini trend of drinking goldfish cocktails. You know, goldfish swimming all googly-eyed in cocktail, then GULP!
I was unfortunate enough to actually witness this once and it was truly horrifying. But I guess it could sort of be called fishing.

I don’t like the smell much, either, and will only eat fish if it is fresh. That means I just caught it. Otherwise…yuck!

But I’d never eat a goldfish. dead or alive. Goldfish crackers – yes. Real goldfish – NO!

I have a lovely pet fish “Lava” who has a personality and everything. He knows it’s me and waves his fins and gives me the big face when I walk by. I haven’t actually been fishing in a while, and my husband is starting to feel a bit strange about killing fish as well. But he didn’t always feel that way…

I got quite a kick out of your revulsion to fish. My favorite fish story (I have none of my own — I think they’re slimy too) is Barbara Park’s “Junie B. Jones Smells Something Fishy” in which she takes a Fish Stick (right out of the freezer) and puts it on a string leash and carts it to school for Pet Day. Hilarious.

Euuurgh Jo – You write it late…I come to it late..There’s many a reason I won’t go swimming in rivers or the sea and the thought of fish is one of them. I’m off to bed now knowing what I’ll be dreaming of. Shudder ….

Fish…euurrrgh! My ex bought 2 goldfish for our daughter, Fatty and Skinny, and fatty ATE skinny. Fatty, who I think was a coy carp with a growth imbalance cos he/it was bloody HUGE, had a habit of lunging out of the tank like, well, like a fish lunger..erm. Anyhoo, I had to put a big paperback ( jackie collins or some other such fabulously trashy tome) AND a bunch of banannas ( I was desperate) to keep the lid on the tank. Hence FEAR OF FISH IN TANKS IN HOUSES…EURRRRGH!!!!!!!!
