I’m tucking Miss M into bed. Stories have been read, lullabies sung and even Chelsea the chavtastic turtle has been bestowed with a goodnight kiss.
Suddenly Miss M sits up. It is one of those stiff jerky manoeuvres, the kind normally seen in old horror films, straight backed, arms forward, body a right angle. And she grips my arm, her eyes wide, her mouth an O.
Miss M: “Mummy…”
She pauses and tightens her grip on my arm to ensure she has my full attention, her gaze holding mine as I wait for the horror I am sure she is about to reveal. And I’m thinking,
Is she remembering a bad dream?
Has something scared her?
Is there a grotty, bewhiskered, raging, yet silent beast behind me preparing to pounce?
She takes a deep breath, her eyes never leaving my face as she utters the following words;
Miss M: “Mummy. When my am bigger my will need bigger trousers.”

aaaah you should have sidetracked her on to the joys of shopping. that’s the true lesson to be learned here. a woman must shop and accessorize well. it’s not your size of trouser that counts, it’s the bracelet you put with it!
