The lights are dim. Not dark, but softer somehow. Maybe it’s something to do with the soft furnishings the light is bouncing between, instead of the cold tiles and stark white walls that normally surround me.
I sit beside Miss E as she sips her milk and we gaze at the singer on the TV, then I turn my head back to the smaller screen. The shiny new wonderful screen that sits atop my knees smiling back at me.
Miss E’s eyes follow my fingers as they type and she suggests titles for this post:
Miss E: ’The most important thing in my life…”
I give her a crooked smile, my eyebrow raised.
Miss E: ‘ ..except me and M.”
I smile at her and raise both eyebrows, nodding in agreement.
Miss E: ”How about, ‘Don’t touch.’”
Me: ”Yeah, yeah, little Miss Sarky.”
Miss E: ”Whatever Mum. Talk to the hand.”
And I sit back and smile to myself because this is it. This is what I wanted. Soft lighting, carpeted floor, and my family around me. Instead of sitting in my cold kitchen, with gerbils, the tumble drier and the washing machine for company, not to mention the slugs.
I can sit anywhere in my house now.
I can blog beside Mr B on the settee while we watch “QI” or “Criminal Minds” or “Mock the Week.”
I can write stories cuddled up beside Misses E and M, while helping Miss E with her homework, or answering Miss M’s questions or just watching them play and interact.
At night when sleep evades me I can switch on my bedside lamp and write myself tired, or catch up my blog reading while Mr B snores beside me.
I finally have it people, I have my laptop, my Macbook. This is my own consumer whore moment and I like it.
Now I just have to learn how to use it.

I’m happy for Mr. B but I’m thrilled to bits for you! I don’t have a laptop but I borrow Neil’s fairly frequently and it’s so heavenly! Ironically I take it into the kitchen sometimes and listen to my playlist as I do dishes. Love it!
I’m in the living room at the moment cuddling with my kids while they watch a bit of tv and I get some writing done. The freedom is incredible, isn’t it!
Enjoy!

Dear Mr B, feel free to use the MacBook ….
October 18th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Actually, until you mentioned it in this post, a movable laptop was not on my mind at all, but now has become a distinct priority on my wish list. I could sit on the sofa quite comfortably and pretend to be good company for the Überhund and still blog. Would I like that? Possibly, maybe.

Congratulations, Jo! I am happily typing away from the comfort of my couch right now. I love my laptop!

Congrats! I told my little brother he needed one. He records music and is always taking his big PC everywhere. I think I spoke to soon because when he went to plug it back up it crashed.
It would be nice to have a lap top. I know now what I want for Christmas!!!!!
Hope you enjoy as much as I can imagine!
You sure deserve one!

our laptops could be twins!!
October 18th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Yay! That is fabulous. So very excited for you. I would take my laptop with me and use it on my lap, but the thing heats up so dang hot that it burns my legs. Not to mention my router broke so I don’t get wireless internet now…rather useless as a “lap”top. I think that’s what I’m going to hit up hubby for next : )

Is it one of the new shiny aluminum ones? I want a new shiny aluminum one so bad, even though m ycurrent MacBook is completely adequate for everything I need to do on it.

When I was able to bring my work laptop home, it was so liberating. I like being able to sit with my family too. So much nicer. Now, if I can only get a laptop of my own.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Ooooh, I had a laptop. Once. I don’t anymore. I’m jealous.

KIm, the freedom is fantastic. I’m sat here now in my lovely warm living room huddled over my laptop and it feels great.
David I am shocked, hee hee. And Mr B can only use my laptop if he stops battering at the keys like they’re his drums.
Irene, pretend is the word, but actually you do feel more involved and available which is nice.
Momo thanks, it’s heaven.
Sybil thanks. She is beautiful.
Hilary, I’m just getting to know mine but I love it already,
Mie, I think this is the start of a long and happy relationship.
Maria thanks babe. I am a lucky lucky lady.
Kitten thanks. I hope you get your Christmas wish and I hope your brother’s pc gets better soon. x
Cami, twins is good. I am so excited. This is an investment in our future. I love it.
Erin this gets quite hot so I have it on a cushion. The wireless thing is amazing. I wonder if I’ll be able to blog in the garden??
Dan no, it’s the older model so I got a good deal. It’s my first Mac so I’m in awe of its fabulousness. Hope you get your aluminum one though.
Lilacs, thanks, it is lovely. I feel dead lucky.
Avon, that’s what everyone’s telling me and so far I can totally see why. I love it.
Daryl I might just take you up on that. I’m having a few teething problems, but Ashley from Upstart Blogger is a good mate so I’m getting there.
Tara R, I used to bring my work laptop home but I couldn’t go online with it. I’m loving the freedom, and the kids and I have had some great fun with the camera today and all the effects you can use.
DFTF, this is my first and I am treating it like a baby. I took it up to bed last night and Mr B just laughed at me.
Sandy, I’m the same person, honest, hee hee.

It has taken me so long to understand my PC and not to scream when it fails me. But I dream, in technicolour of a beautiful laptop and am saving like crazy [no credit thanks-that's what got us in this mess] But then I’d have to have a Wipi thingey and an extra this and that and it would take me forever to learn everything and what would happen to all the junk I have on Paco? [doesnt everyone have a name for their best friend?] Then it’s someone’s birthday or Christmas and Tkmaxx or new plants for the garden and etc. etc.
Here from David.

I had to laugh while reading this, because just Saturday I pressed my laptop into my son’s arms and pleaded with to “just take this cursed thing”…yes, I hate my laptop. Glad you love yours, but for me, I’ll take the cold kitchen tiles the clothes dryer and the gerbil…I call that peace and quiet, lol! Great post…

Nothing quite like a mac! They are great! Nothing like a loving family either. Nothing like a blog!
Congratulations on POTD over at David’s.
