Slow and silent the weary travellers wend their way home. Through towering pine where sun light filters into scattered sprinkles on the soft brown earth.
A small hand waves goodbye to the myriad of woodland creatures that line their way, a furry salute to this mini snow-white. Grey squirrels, emboldened by a feast of leftover crisps, nuts and coco pops, skip close to the plodding line of cars, performing for the little girl within.
Sleepy eyed she watches their dance. Storing up the memories layer by layer. The ones she will pass on to Daddy and Grandma. The ones she will tell at nursery. The ones she will keep safe for her dreams.

I wonder if we lived every day in such a place as this, would we still see it?
I’m not sure that we would, but maybe some of you will tell me different.
I hope so.

“Bye bye skwiwels. See you next time.”

We’ve been living here in the country for three years now and the girls are still mesmerized by the wildlife. It makes me happy.

We look for all the squirrels and birds and other fun things that cross our back yard. The other day MG and I were mesmerized by an Orange Salamander that methodically made his way through our yard. I hope to see lots of baby orange salamader’s scampering around soon.
(Squirrels are evil nut stealers though, just ask my little flock of birds)

I used to feed the birds and the squirrels before I moved to the condo. I had a little yard then, with trees, and I gave the squirrels peanuts so they would not eat the bird-seed. I miss watching them…

My nephew used to pronounce that word ‘awiwal’ – and actually even the final ‘l’ was a ‘w’ too, so it was ‘awiwaw’. I can never see them without thinking of him (he’s 14 now, so would be mortified to think I was relating this).

I’d like a hat, please…?
I love me some hats! But only ones made by Jo.

Hello! So would you recommend CP then? My dad is offering to take me and the boys for a few days in the summer and I am really keen to go – I think they will have a whale of a time and to be honest I would love a change of scenery. Particularly one that involves thieving skwiwls. And LOVB the hat.

I’ve lived in the country my whole life, and I see it….I always see it. ♥

We still see the squirrels. I’m not very good at going for country walks and marvelling at the rest of nature, though. Just as I never looked up and around me when I lived in Oxford and only marvelled at the architecture when people were visiting me.

That hat is fabulous!
We used to feed a squirrel who came to the window begging for nuts every day – we named him Nut – Nut. Nut – Nut became a major pain in the arse, because he’d come tapping (yes – he tapped) at the window all day long! One day I saw him, super fat, laying on the porch railing. Maybe Nut – Nut was a girl all along? Regardless – we never saw Nut – Nut again.

Next time do a super hero mask ..
And are you telling me there are no squirrels in your neck of the woods?

She’ll ask what happened to her hat and why you didn’t save it! LOL

Kim and Mie, I am so so glad. I love being there amongst the trees and the wildlife.
Susan I would miss them too. We get the occasional squirrel, fox and hedgehog in our garden as well as a regular robin and I never tire of them, but there are just so many there. I hope you find somewhere lovely near the condo where you can find your little bit of nature.
Iota that is so cute. I love their pronunciations. My niece ME declared the squirrel badorial – which means adorable.
Zerilada I will make you a hat of the finest crayolas.
Nicola I love CP. We just swim all day, go for walks in the woods and relax. We’ve been three years in a row now with my whole family and it’s a tradition we plan to continue. Go for it.
Corey, Oh my bob you definitely do.
Hi Skywind. Thanks.
Coding Mamma, I suppose that’s what I mean. Would we just ’see’ them, or would we stop and look at them? I suppose I’m a bit of a soppy bugger.
Ahhh Sybil, I bet Nut-Nut had to move to a bigger hole or something.
Daryl, we have squirrels, just not that many or that tame. They chase around all over and have pretty much no fear. I love it.
Akela, she might, hee hee. I’ll tell her a squirrel ate it.
