Yes it’s arrived again, but although this year’s subject is Climate Change, I’ve decided to not write about Climate Change itself, but more about how you can begin taking steps towards combatting climate change…wait for it…by shopping.

Yes I said shopping.
You see, while I looked into this post, and read the horror stories of species soon to be extinct, habitats disappearing, people starving and suffering, while that was all very awful and sad and terrible, I got a bit…well I got a bit bored.
I know.
I’m a terrible woman.
So instead of looking at the problem, I’m looking at what WE can actually do to help.
And shopping is something that will make a difference.
No really.
Have a look here
I mean, what kid wouldn’t like this?
“Inspire and encourage the budding botanist with this beautifully presented beneficial insect garden seed collection. The four miniature seed pouches contain seeds carefully selected to attract varied species of insects.”
I know my two would and it’s only £6.95
There’s truly something for everyone there, from gadgets, to food, to eco-wedding planning. And if I’ve managed to find one site, there must be a ton more out there right?
So I’m issuing a challenge.
I plan to buy at least one Christmas gift from a store that by its actions and ethics helps to prevent climate change and allows others to make Eco-Friendly choices.
I’m looking for something for my Dad especially, he’ll be the one I go for.
And remember, you don’t have to actually buy a ‘physical’ gift.
Adopt an animal for somebody
Buy a ‘well’, a camel, some fermented cows urine (yes really) and help people to change their own lives
Return a tree to the rainforest
And remember, all the things you don’t have to wrap and post will save on paper and air miles and be therefore even more earth friendly.
(If however you can’t imagine Christmas without gift wrap, they even sell that here too.)
And while you’re at it, why not treat yourself to some of these.

Slurp.
Now go forth my lovelies. Shop like you’ve never shopped before. You’ll be helping the climate if you do it right, and heck, it will be fun.
P.S. I’ll let you know what I get my Dad.
P.P.S. Happy Birthday to my gorgeous niece little J. Can’t believe you’re 3 hon. It’s a bit scary. Auntie Jo and Mummy and Daddy want you to stop growing for a bit ok? Good. x
P.P.S.S. If you’ve not taken part in Blog Action Day before then you can learn more here, but in short, “Blog Action Day is an annual event every October 15th that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day with the aim of sparking discussion around an issue of global importance.
So far 7,333 from 137 countries have registered for this year’s event. To participate, all you need to do is write a single post on your blog about the issue of climate change on October 15th” Blog Action Day Website
So that means you might not be too late people.

I love the seeds collection that is right up my street. We are hard up this year, so everyone is getting home made pressies and they can complain all they want. What I am trying to say is that I hope that people start to change this throwaway society that we are living in and start to make do and mend a little bit. Not having the cash is forcing this upon us, but it is a green and ecological way to live. It harks back to a simpilar time and I am learning to embrace it.

The Mad House I totally agree. And homemade prezzies mean so much more. Brilliant.

I stopped using hairspray years and years ago because of the Ozone…and the fact that the bees swarmed me when they smelled it. Silly me thinking that was all that needed doing, when there is so much more. We are on a plastic bottle boycott…if it is not in glass or tin…well, aluminum…I’m sure there are many more ways we can make changes, and will.

The seeds collection is right up my street too. I have just sent my sister an Oxfam chicken for her birthday – she hasn’t thanked me yet so I don’t know what she thought! I sent my godmother seven Good Gifts ducks for her 70th and she loved them. I am definitely planning this sort of a Christmas. You’d have to be a pretty rotten sort of a person to complain about an Oxfam gift.
(Off now to investigate Blog Action Day -> )

I think I’ll adopt a biological chicken for myself this Christmas and get very good eggs as a result. It’s good that you reminded me of this option, Jo. It had completely slipped my mind.

We are looking at a greener Christmas this year, true money (well lack of) has made me think more about what I’m spending my hard earnt cash on! We will be making some of our own cards, presents and wrapping paper (recycled brown parcel paper and potato printing is one of our favs!) we will be targeting our efforts at the grandparents as they appreciate abit of creativity from the grandchildren!!!

a great list of some interesting things we can do. Thank you for contributing to blog action day and for being part of the solution.

I am not sure if we have any effect on global warming but I think we still need to be energy efficient and help the environment.

Once the deep mystery of “climate change” has been solved
And “What’s green and causes CC?” is no longer a popular riddle,
The legacy of the era most likely will be:
“Never in recorded history have so many made so much over so little”.
(With apologies to the late, great Winston Churchill).

Eco-friendly, yes! Making one’s own presents and cards like Sara says is something we often do or at least partially. Recycling has been stepped up to a bigger level in our area in the past yr. (Whohoooooooo!) This is the 2nd blog I’ve read about Blog Action Day. I hadn’t heard of it before. Great post.

Do not buy me cow’s urine for Christmas even if it does save a little tiny bit of the planet.
Point made.

If I treat myself to all that choccy everyday, do I still get the Adopt an Animal?
I bought my friend a goat once. She wasnt happy because she couldnt pet it. It was based somewhere in Africa.
She needed long arms!

It is a great idea. Consumerism is so mad that it’s good to see a positive outlet for it.
