Oh my Bob I am so disproportionately proud.
Seriously, you’d think I’d managed to juggle a cart load of monkeys, a pound of prickly pears, the England Rugby team and a small prune.
Or that I’d achieved world peace through the sharing of chocolate
Or managed to woo David Tennant through the medium of the Morris dance while dressed up as a banana.
Alas, it is none of the above, and yet I am proud.
You see, although we didn’t make it to the Lyle’s Pre Pancake Party due to access of the white stuff they were lovely enough to send us a goodie bag with all the necessaries to make pancakes, including a cuddly lion who tasted, erm, yummy. The thing is, well, having that bag sat there on my kitchen side kind of filled me with dread; because I have NEVER made pancakes.
NEVER
MADE
PANCAKES!!!!!!!!
Misses E and M love pancakes. They eat them weekly at their Dad’s, the Pancake Prince of Mansfieldshire, but goddamit they even sent me a blumming frying pan. All I needed to provide was fresh eggs and milk. I really had no escape excuse reason not to try
Bugger.
So….

We had a go.

Sighhhh, even that pancake looks proud.
The Golden Syrup gave me warm memories of my Gran Booth who always had a tin in her cupboard, and the new squeezy bottle is fab even though a small part of me (the part that doesn’t have to clean up) did miss watching the golden sweetness flow from the spoon and leave shimmering trails all over the bowl, like spun sugar.
I’m thinking now we have conquered pancakes we may move on to Flap Jacks. I’m also thinking they would be kind of nice coated in Green & Blacks Organic chocolate and laid in a box on a cushion of tissue paper as a gift for Mother’s Day. Then again we might just eat them.
NB. If you are also a pancake virgin then head over to Lyle’s We Love Pancakes site and follow their step by step guide. They’re easy I promise, and I am an excellent tosser. Also, Cafe Bebe has hosted a yummy Flip Tastic Pancake Day Carnival if you want to have a real erm, battering pancake Fest. ;D

I’ve been a tosser myself for years! There is nothing like a fresh pancake. Well done!
February 19th, 2010 at 9:35 am
Mie, I always knew you’d be a fabulous tosser.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:04 am
There is noting better than when your 4 year old (in my case) is proud of his mummy being a tosser!! Its awsome – apparently
February 19th, 2010 at 9:37 am
Heh heh, yep, it’s a good reason to be proud. ;D
February 17th, 2010 at 9:46 am
For a pancake virgin I’d say that looks just about perfect. I made the batter this year but left the tossing to my husband….I just realised that sounds rather dodgy but does he does make a good pancake!
February 19th, 2010 at 9:38 am
Snort, dodgy and yet fabulous. Actually, I really enjoyed the tossing. Miss E used a spatula to flip hers but mine and Miss M’s nearly plugged the hole in our ceiling.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:47 am
The first one is never very good. That’s the thing to remember with pancakes. Something to do with the frying pan getting prepared.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:39 am
Iota you’re right. We threw the first one away as it folded while it was still a little soggy so we fed it to the bin.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:48 am
Loved the idea of you in a banana costume doing a Morris dance, with DT watching. Perhaps you should send the concept in to Jonathan Ross. I think he’d like it. And it’s one of the few BBC shows we get here, so I could watch you.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:40 am
Ahhhh Iota. Jonathan Ross is no longer employed by the BBC. MAybe I could send the idea as a concept for the new shows he might be doing in the US. ;D
February 17th, 2010 at 9:57 am
A little on the burnt side, Jo. *cough*
Yesterday you taught my daughter the word Chillax, today it’s Tosser, what will it be tomorrow?!!
February 19th, 2010 at 9:42 am
Rosie my dear, I hold you completely responsible for the word ‘chillax’. I have definitely seen you use it in at least one email.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:05 am
Awesome looking pancake, you should be proud. i failed misserably at my first attempt to flip a pancake, shame i had to do it on camera. ah well.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:42 am
Awwwwww, but the only way is up right? You should get someone to film you now you are fabulous at it.
February 17th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
Looove pancakes! Aren’t flapjacks the same thing? Now I have to Google!!
February 19th, 2010 at 9:43 am
Sybil we say The Princess and the Frog today and they called pancakes Flapjacks too. Over here FlapJacks are chewy oat and treacle/honey cakes. They’re yummy.
February 17th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
woo hoo…you go girl. ♥ oh and now I’m wondering if a a flap jack is different than a pancake. I always thought they were the same. I need to go google now.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:45 am
Uk Flapjacks are different to US ones, They’re yummy.
February 17th, 2010 at 12:18 pm
That’s one seriously good lookin’ pancake! I’m in awe! We did pancakes too, just lemon and sugar. But there’s nothing to beat a dribble of Golden Syrup on porridge and we’re nearly out so the squeezy bottle sounds like a plan.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:46 am
Catherine it’s fabulous. I love the old tim but oh my bob the squeezy bottle is so much easier. And it is yummy on porridge, I agree lovely.
February 17th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
HOWCOME I NEVER GOT SENT ANY PANCAKE STUFF??!!??
February 19th, 2010 at 9:47 am
Because you’re a boy? Because you smell of carrots? Because you make porridge with diet coke? ;D
February 17th, 2010 at 3:44 pm
That is a v ery handsome pancake—good for you!!!
My favorite are blueberry pancakes, followed by banana pancakes. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. And I am spoiled—I grew up near Canada, so we always had REAL maple syrup. Now I will accept nothing less!!!
February 19th, 2010 at 9:48 am
Susan I have never had real maple syrup I don’t think. Blueberry and banana pancakes sound yum though. Slurp.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:28 am
Love the way you’ve styled it (darling!) against the red spotted tablecloth – very County Homes & Interiors meets French bistro. Tres chic. Your efforts look yummy.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:49 am
They were really yummy Angels and Urchins. That spotty tablecloth has seen everything from pancakes to play dough. I love it. It’s from The Token House in Nottingham, one of my favourite shops ever.
February 18th, 2010 at 9:10 am
Well done! I don’t like pancakes but MWM does so I make him a ton!
February 19th, 2010 at 9:50 am
You are such a fab lady to YWM Akela. They are so filling though. We managed one and a bit each.
February 18th, 2010 at 12:16 pm
Top tossing Jo!
We had pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, and I must admit to making rather a pig of myself. I’m at my Mums, so I think it’s acceptable to revert to childish behaviour…well, to a certain extent. And she had the new Golden Syrup in a bottle – I’m loving it! None of that dribbling all down the side of the tin…although I do love the pretty Tate and Lyle tin. Ho hum. I’m feeling hungry now.
Glad to see you’re back blogging, my dear.Big hugs to you and the girlies.
Mya xxx
February 19th, 2010 at 9:53 am
Thanks lovely. Hope you’re having a fab time in Blighty. If you’re ever near Notts pop in and have a cuppa with the boy and the man. I loved the old tin too. I can always remember prizing the end off with the end of a spoon.
February 18th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Well done you. I chickened out once again this year but I fear my years are numbered. I’m guessing when the girl gets to school a lot of avoidance by ignoring tactics are going to become entirely futile.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:53 am
Yep, at some point you too will become a tosser lovely Barbara. There is no escape.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:41 pm
Ah. Well done. I’ve avoided pancakes for years after a few disasterous attempts resulting in smoke alarms and a general burned crustiness around my results. Perhaps I should give it a go. Golden Syrup in a squeezy though… surely half the pleasure is licking the spoon after it’s been dipped in the tin?
February 19th, 2010 at 9:55 am
Heh heh Sparx, that is true. And watching it dribble in tiny thin threads between the spoon and your mouth.
February 20th, 2010 at 5:17 pm
I’m a 3rd generation tosser! Nothing like keeping it in the family, my girls can all toss too – so I guess that’s 4th generation. We live on the other side of the pond though, so I figure my girls will have to work hard to keep the tradition going with their kids etc. They will be flying in the face of American pancakes and American batter that you can buy in a squirty can – how scary is that?!
February 21st, 2010 at 10:55 am
Hi veryanniemary, sounds like they’ve every chance of keeping that tradition going. Squirty batter does sound scary though.
February 24th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
v glad you popped your pancake cherry! i found making them on pancake day v momentous for some reason. silly as i’ve made them a zillion times before. but this was the first time i’d made them for my little boy and his dad. and as they both sat and ate them and said ‘deeeeelicious’ i felt about as warm and gooey as your pancake drenched in golden syrup. (i’m more of a lemon and sugar person myself….)
ps glad you felt like blogging again.
February 26th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
Awww thanks babieswhobrunch, and that definitely sounds like a warm and gooey moment.
