Was Hadrian a bricky?

Sitting here in Grantham station after my superhero Dad rushed me to Nottingham station due to a cancelled train (Thanks so much Blumming Robinhood Line), it is the first time I have actually though deeply about ‘the wall’.

I mean, I know the basic history, but to be honest I’ve not looked into it further and it got me thinking.
You see, well, as far as I can tell, if it’s called Hadrian’s wall, then it must be ‘Hadrian’s Wall’ right? As in, it belongs to him.

And if Hadrian owns the wall then he must be responsible for the wall, you know, general maintenance, providing toilet facilities, repointing etc. So, my point? Well, my point is, if I had a choice, I wouldn’t really like a wall being named after me. Obviously ‘Jobo’s Wall’ has a bit of a ring to it, but i’d actually be quite happy with ‘JoBo’s Low Maintenance Hillock’, or ‘JoBo’s Single Unbreakable Brick within a Larger Structure’. I’m not fussy really.

Just thought I’d share that.

Right my train is due anytime and my battery is low so see you all soon. Watch out Newcastle, blogger invasion imminent. Keep up with us here or at Hadrian’s Walk blog.

Thanks for all your donations so far, and please keep ‘em coming if you can.

Love you E and M. Big kisses and cuddles. Don’t forget to feed the gerbils and check their water. X

********UPDATE********

An excellent point. He built he, ergo he should look after the damn thing. And walk it too on behalf of everyone doing it for charity so the ‘walkers’ can nip down the pup and drink wine then collect their sponsorship money. No one said YOU have to do the walking, did they? No. So Hadrian should do it what with the whole ‘because it’s there’ stuff etc etc.

    Good luck! x

I’ve not been to Hadrian’s Wall since I was there on a school field trip many years ago. I remember it well as I puked on the bus ride there. Oh, the memories! LOL

Anyways, wishing you lots and lots of good luck today. What you’re doing is truly amazing. x

I dunno, was he? Why was the wall named after him? did he commission it? i’m assuming he didn’t build it, well not single handily anyway – it is quite long you know.

No, Hadrian was just a normal kind of guy with a nagging wife at home. Building a wall the width of England just seemed a good way to stay out from under her feet!

Just a thought – while you’re traversing ‘JoBo’s Hillock’ – are you walking this whole bloody wall, or are you doing it in kinda tag team formation?

    Just wondering…
