Once again Miss E has had a project to complete. You remember the mountain? The biscuit parthenon? Well this term they’ve been studying World War II. I’m keeping my fingers crossed she gets some good feedback as the message so far with homework hasn’t been the best, in that it hasn’t been marked and the words “I don’t need to look at it as I know you can do it” have apparently been spoken.
The thing is, my kid likes feedback. She needs feedback. Yes she works hard, yes she’s bright, but the words “If they know I can do it then why should I bother?” have also been spoken.
Her teacher is a really nice lady, and I hate to complain, but if this isn’t marked then it’s the third big piece of homework since September and it’s not good enough.
Arghhhhhhhhh.
Look at what Miss E and her friend Miss J did though. Their project was split into different skills such as being word smart or body smart. This is their effort for nature smart.

It’s made from leaves, orange peel and a couple of petals. I think it’s worth feedback, and believe me there was a ton of other fabulous pieces from the rest of the class that were also deserved of feedback.
I don’t get it. How can you be a teacher and not understand that hard work deserves to be looked at, commented on and critiqued in a useful way?
How do kids get to know their strengths and weaknesses if that doesn’t happen?
How do they know they’re on the right track?
And why am I getting deja vu?
Right, rant over, parental showing off done, and now I want to tell you about something mad and hilarious and intriguing that one of my best bloggy (and since Hadrian’s Walk, real-life) friend’s is doing.
You could win £100 just by helping her shop!
Seriously, go and see what the lovely Ellie is up to with Ebay. It’s crazy, but I like it. :D

Did they use fried eggs for the wing emblems?

No Spencer. That is some satsuma peal and a clematis petal. Tsk.

Brilliant but,
Did they use fried eggs for the wing emblems?

As I said before, it’s a satsuma peel and a clematis petal. And why didn’t we get brilliant the first time? ;D

Love the conversation with double-commenting Spencer Park! Her work is fab. It is dreadful it isn’t being marked. You should speak to the head, I’ve heard he’s good. I’ve been waiting four weeks for a reading challenge to be marked. Really not good

Thanks Rosie. It seems to get worse as they get older. It’s so annoying. I think I’m going to speak to the teacher first and just ask for a little more personal feedback for E. I know a lot of other parents are also getting fed up. It takes so much of family and fun time to get homework done. I don’t think they always get that.

How blumming annoying that they’re not giving feedback. I certainly be having a word in their ear.
Thanks for the plug you lovely, lovely lady. Mwah!

It’s so annoying. We’ve had no issues until year 5 and now year 6. It just seems mad. I’ll be having a chat though.

All children need is encouragement, this helps them develop their talent and do better. If a teacher, someone in authority, isn’t giving that encouragement, then how do they expect the children to flourish. All credit to the parents in this case. Lovely collage!

That’s what I think too CJ. I’m sure she’s encouraging in other ways but they need feedback, positive or negative, to begin to evaluate their own work, and to progress. We’ll be having a chat.

Misses E and J that collage is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY FABULOUSLY FANTASTIC!! Three gold stars from me. I especially like how you have used leaves to look like trees, the clever propellers (are they sycamore seeds?) and the juxtaposition between the clean lines of the airoplane and the beautiful textures of the leaves and petals you used to make it.
Frankly if I’d put in the hours of effort to create something like that only to have it chucked in a pile by my teacher I’d be pretty dispirited and cross. You know teachers are always moaning parents don’t speak to them apart from at parent teacher evenings, I definately think you should be having a firm word or three. And if teacher doesn’t get the message I’d totally go over her head and speak to her line manager. Please let us know how it goes xx
ps – of course, she has your support, which will make all the difference in the long term. Doesn’t make this any less annoying!

Awwwwwww thanks lovely. E was very pleased with your comment. She won’t all glowy when I read it out to her. Mwah. (That’s a big kiss)
