You walk past averted eyes down a badly lit corridor. Strip lights buzz and flicker flares of static down your spine. Adrenalin speeds you on while your mind battles to slow things down, to drag time out, to stop this.
A door opens and sterilised people will you into a sterilised room. One steps forward and waits as you are ushered into position. Then there is a nod, a hand on your arm, a cover drawn back, and an intake of breath.
Is it? Is it them?
This is the thing I hope I never have to do.
I can’t imagine it. I tried but all I came up with was this creaky rehash of a TV crime programme. It wasn’t really imaginings, just rememberings. I’m sure it’s not really like that. I’m sure they try to put you at ease as best they can. I’d like to think your possible loved one is in gentle light in a comfortable room, their humanity retained with a soft pillow, a blanket, warmth.
To be honest though, I don’t really want to know.
Not ever.
