Not amazing, but there was hope.

A farm park seemed like a good idea, so they loaded the car with kids and snacks and headed off to Matlock in the stunning Derbyshire Peak District.

As they drove, things got a little darker.

The mist rolled in…

And images of Heathcliff and Catherine filled Ms Beaufoix’s head. Sighhhh.

Yeah ok, I know, that was based in Yorkshire, but the bleak winter scenery, the rolling hills, the weathered rocky landscape, the mist…you get it right?

Let’s just ponder that for a while.

Well, ok, just Heathcliff.

Heathcliff, sighhh.

Passionate, dark, brooding…

Ok, on with the story.

As they neared the bustling little town, favoured by leather clad and bearded bikers, hippy chicks, posh folks, and well, pretty much everyone because it’s so darn lovely, they noticed something unusual.

When they reached the car park of the Farm Park, (try saying that very quickly while drinking a pint of port), their worst fears were confirmed…

There had obviously been some kind of mass exodus, or maybe an alien invasion, because, this bustling hamlet of culture, quaintness and character, was

EMPTY!!

Or it might have just been the cold and the wind and the rain…

But hey, they got to have lunch here;

The food wasn’t great, but they loved the idea, though of course it would be even better if they added French afternoons into the mix, just hang a little garlic over the door, et voila.

And after wandering around a few fabulous antique shops, the adventure truly began when their 7 year old daughter, Miss E, was attacked by one of the above mentioned aliens;

A face sucking Minnie Mouse from the planet, erm, Cheese.

Luckily they managed to save their small child, and escaped relatively unharmed, unless you count mud splatter.

And to top off this tale of joy and merriment, a real treat awaited them on their way home.

No, not a sighting of a wild unicorn atop a blustery hill doing the can can,

but this..

Croc-a-tile.

How clever, it’s like a very funny play on words.

Or as Mr B would say, “It’s like a very funny play on words…”

Sighh.

And they all lived happily ever after, especially Ms Beaufoix, as she had only yesterday received this lovely award from the thought provoking, witty and wonderful Sweet Irene. Thank you so much Irene.

Erm, and when I say, she, I mean me, right, just in case you thought Alien Minnie had infiltrated my blog.

Miss M squeezes me hard in a big bear hug, then sits beside me and holds my face in her tiny hands.

Then she looks deep into my eyes, fixes a serious expression on her face, and says…

Miss M: “And I turned into a sponge.”

Me: “Pardon M?”

Miss M: “At Hursery. I turned into a sponge.”

Me: “At Nursery?”

Mr B: “Was it a dream?”

Miss M: “Yes. An my friends weren’t sponges.”

Me: “Weren’t they?”

Miss M: “No, but my cousin was.”

Me: “Oh. And what did you do in your dream?”

Miss M: “I talked a crying noise.”

Me: “Oh. Were you sad, or is that just how sponges talk?”

Miss M: “I was a sad sponge.”

Me: “Oh dear. ”

I glance at Mr B and we share a smile, which I manage to hide quickly, then I return her solemn gaze with my own.

Miss M: “And den I waked up.”

Me: “Ooooh. That was a funny dream wasn’t it? Maybe you’ll be a happy sponge next time.”

Miss M: “Mmm. Can I have some moke pease?”

We’ve talked about being a sad sponge on and off all day. It doesn’t seem to bother M.

But me?

I want to know why she wasn’t a happy sponge.

Did some of the other sponges upset her?

Had she fallen over and hurt herself?

Can sponges hurt themselves? I mean, they pretty much boing back into shape don’t they?

Then I think of my kids and their ‘relationship’ with sponges.

They tend to bite bits off them. It’s like a mad irresistible thing.

Sponge = bite.

So then I’m thinking, maybe I should find out who made her cry?
Or tell her to tell the teacher?

Then reality flicks me on the nose and goes, “Noooo. It’s just a blumming dream you looney.”

It’s mad isn’t it? Even in their dreams we want to comfort and protect. Maybe in her next dream a big Mummy sponge will go into school and kick some little sponge butt with her amazing karate skills.

I didn’t suggest that to her…but it could happen right?

And talking of skillz, first of all I have to apologize to the gorgeous, talented and very clever Miss Cami, who awarded me with her very own Mad Skillz Award on December 6th LAST YEAR.

I am sooooo bad.

She awarded me this honour for my psychic abilities as I knew she was playing with her new phone, ytou know, THAT phone. THE phone. Big sighh.

They are neat and deliberate looking, and I can’t help visualizing the near miss that might have been. I look down at the point the two trails meet to check for smoke, rubble, and erm, craters??
I know none will be there. I mean, we’d have heard it on the news, they’d have blocked the road off, and well, there’d have been a huge cloud of burning ash we could probably have seen from our house, but there is nothing.

Involuntarily I imagine the two pilots in their mini planes, Dastardly and Muttley, blackguards of the sky.
I see a game of dare gone wrong, nobody backing down at the last minute, clipped wings and trimmed egos. I see cartoon pilots in scarves and goggles, ‘cabbage crates over the briney’ and all that.

A glazed expression is fixed on my face. Any one driving past us will probably look at Mr B with sympathy.
I look a bit like this.

Miss M: “Mummy, dare’s a kiss in the sky.”

Talking of kisses, gorgeous Mya has bestowed upon me a full on snog.

‘It’s a big kiss, of the chaste, platonic kind, from me to you with the underlying ‘thanks’ message implied. I really do appreciate your support and your friendship, and yes, your comments.’

That’s the bit you have to put. Mya is far less ladylike…

But just a simple, heart felt, (what is heart felt? Could you make a dress out of it??), cough, a simple heart felt thanks to someone who is just, well, fabulous.

She has given us the chocowar with epic polly pocket posts where she keeps track of who everyone is, even after having forgone chocolate for a month, chicken porn, road safety tips, the thrower, Queen of Hearts, Mummy Monday, an Aunt who really hearts Jesus, and she did NanoWriMo with me and Cami and Kim, and calls her boss darling, and makes me laugh so much, and well, I love her.

Another reason I love her is that she sent me a fabulous ‘cheer Jo up after her op/Happy Birthday for the 12th (Hint hint) parcel’, full of all manner of gorgeous things such as cute finger puppets which will appear in a future post,

a fab book, in fact this one…

I read it. It’s good.

And a hamster in a bag with an Edward Monkton poem on it.
I heart Sir Edward of Monkton.

And a card that is funny and witty, and oh, just a ton of lovely, lovely stuff.

But she has also given me something you cannot buy, and no, I don’t need any cream for it, tsk,

She has given me, wait for it,
‘cred.’

Yes, cred in my hood.

You see, she has polished my reputation at my local post depot enormously by addressing me as ‘The Fabulous Jo Beaufoix’ when sending me my lovely lovely goody bag – which I will add pictures of when my camera returns from the Camera Repair Shop (after I post it to them tomorrow and they mend it.),

And,

..she even arranged for it to be delivered while I was out, so that my neigbour took it in for me and brought it round to me later and actually curtseyed when she handed it to me. I mean, she normally bows her head a little, but she has never actually done a full on curtsey before.

It is a mystery.

Maybe it was small green beings from another planet?

Perhaps some kind of ‘anti-ostrich outfit manipulation’ society?

Or even the ‘Beaufoix Conspiracy Theory Body’ who believe I have sold my soul to a Jaffa Cake??

But…

..somehow, (I have no idea when, or where, or by whom), somehow, I have been biologically altered.
There has been an insertion, an addition, and probably some might say, a perfection of my left cheek, and we’re talking my face here you lot, nothing else. You see, it seems I have developed an off switch.

Yes.

I said ‘ an off switch.’

If it weren’t for Miss M I may never have discovered this. Thank God for small children.

We’re lying on her bed. I’m reading her that book again. I’ve just got to the bit where we assert that ‘a pretty dress is no good at all’, when M pokes me in the cheek.

I look at her, eyebrows raised, then carry on.

Me: “The not so perfect princess has…”

Miss: “No. No. I turning you off mummy. I press de button.”

Me: ” ”

(It’s so cool how 3 year olds have the power to make their parents do almost anything they want isn’t it? Why do we lose that power? I would love to still have that power. Sighhhh.)

Miss M cackles with glee. I point to the book, hinting that we should continue, so Miss M pokes my rght cheek, and I begin again.

Me: “The not so…”

Again she presses the off button. Then she quickly flicks the ‘on switch’ that seems to be situated on my right cheek.

Me: “..perfect princ”

Miss M: “I turn you off mummy. Hee hee hee. Haa haa haa. Mwah ha ha haaaaa.”

And I look at my little girl, and see there is something else in her eyes other than the cute twinkle that is usually there.

My just turned 3 year old has realised there is more to this game than it being funny, or cute, or silly.
My tiny girl has realized that there is power. She has the power to turn me off. When I am turned off, I cannot finish the story, I cannot tell her ‘night night’, and I cannot say the words, ‘Okay M. Sleep time now. Time to stop the game.’

I go cold with fear as I realise what this means.

While she is in control of my ability to articulate, I am stuck. I cannot leave. She can keep me there as long as she wants!

Oh the fear, the terror. I look helplessly from Minnie Mouse, to the fluffy black dog situated below Miss M’s right arm. M is giggling and singing and I am a little scared. Several more times Miss M frees me from my silence to continue with the story, but each time we turn a new page she presses the button and I am once again rendered speechless.

After 2 minutes it’s cute.
After 5 minutes it gets a little annoying.
After 10 it gets worrying. So I formulate a plan. The next time M prods me in the side of my face and shouts, “Off, off” gleefully, I poke myself in the right cheek, jump up from her bed and run away.

God I’m good.

And talking of good, I recently had an email from some people, and I thought what they had to say was kind of important because it’s an opportunity to ‘big up’ some mums. Mums who are doing something for themselves, who have ventured out into, well, let’s face it, what is pretty much still a male dominated world, and built a little niche for themselves…

I’m talking about the ‘Inspirational Business Mum of the Year Award’, which is run by Prowess, who in their own words are;

“..a network of organisations and individuals who support the growth of women’s business ownership. Our work encompasses raising awareness, sharing of best practice, advocacy and information.”

Have a look at the site if you get chance. It is full of useful facts and advice on how to start and grow your business, and is tailored specifically to the challenges business mums face.

The competition is sponsored by Yell.com, who have completed a study, ‘Mum Magnates’ which found that:

‘40 percent of ‘Mum Magnates’ get the idea to start a business whilst pregnant, or within a year of their baby being born.’ (So it seems we’re having some inspirational kids. )

‘92 percent attribute their success to skills they develop after becoming a mother such as multi-tasking, planning, efficiency, and baby poop.’ (Can you tell which one was my own little addition??)

‘Business Mums are well connected and a quarter are in weekly contact with supportive groups.’ (Well we all know about that right? I mean, we have the most supportive community here I could imagine, as well as places like myspace, facebook, and cre8buzz.)

‘The internet is playing a key role with mums who start their own businesses.’ (I am so not surprised at this.)

We spent every evening at the kids disco.

No, not all night, are you mad? Just till it finished at half eight.

The kids danced, the adults drank, well, ok, we danced a bit too. And everyone was happy.

Miss E was a funky monkey, and Miss M shook her thang very convincingly. It was hilarious.
Mr B was all puffed up and proud that his kids had a certain amount of natural rhythm, (what with him being a drummer and all), and it was a great way to tire them out so that when we got to the villa they would sleep and we could all stay up and play addictive games such as Perudo, and chat till the early hours.

(Perudo is fabulous. You should all buy it. Honest. According to Stephen Fry, it is “The second most addictive thing to come out of South America!” And I totally agree.)

Anyway, back to the disco.

Miss E worried me slightly when she did this.

Yes they had padded concrete columns in the kids Disco.

And yes, Miss E decided to straddle them.

I have no idea why, except she loves to climb and has a current infatuation with horses.

Otherwise, erm, I will be steering away from any possible career path this action may inspire.

I mean, I have nothing against pole dancers, but, you know, it’s not something I’d choose for her.
Although, obviously, I wouldn’t stand in her way if that was really her dream job…

Ok, maybe I would.

Hmmm.

I must take her to see a real horse.

Though not this one.
How rude.

Oh, and one more thing, a big thank you to the fabulous, intelligent, witty and wonderful Dumdad for bestowing me with this…

7. Have a tidy house.

But instead, I am here to educate Cami and Troy on the delights of Fruit Shoots and Jaffa Cakes.

So, I will put my teachers hat on.

Ahem. Pens down everybody. Cami, stop fiddling with your phone. Troy, I am over here, not under the table. Now, do I have your full attention?

Right.

Fruit Shoots

Robinson’s Fruit Shoots are the biggest selling kids drinks in the UK. My kids love them, and they are sold everywhere. Pubs, food stores, theme parks, museums, sports clubs, everywhere.

It tastes sickly sweet and comes in these little sports bottles which we save and use for drinks in general as they’re cheaper and more grown up than sippy cups, but still have lids.

But, we have decided recently that Fruit Shoots seem to send Miss E especially, a little bit wappy. She runs around the room giggling madly, and while I know that’s pretty normal for most seven year olds, this is more than just your general everyday daftness. This is full on craziness to the enth degree. I checked the label and realized it is only 10% juice, and that it contains sweeteners which I’ve read can cause hyperactivity in some kids. So although we don’t buy it loads, we will probably buy it even less now and stick with the fresh fruit juices they enjoy, and good old plain water.

Jaffa cakes however, are calorie free, preservative free, additive free, and grow from cocoa and orange trees. They are a fantastic source of vitamins, minerals and other good stuff like fibre and ‘good’ bacteria, and they also contain the antidotes to several poisons. They an be classed as a fruit portion in your daily allowance, and have special toning agents in them that make you look younger, the more you eat.

Ok. That was a lie.

But they are yummy so I don’t care.

According to A Nice Cup of Tea and a Sit Down;
“The Jaffa cake fuses its three elements seamlessly to create a taste and texture that we instantly appreciate. The bitterness of the dark chocolate is complemented by the sweetness of the jam and its zesty orange flavour enhanced and carried to our tastebuds and palette by the chocolate. The sponge base provides a space for these sweet flavours to pause briefly and express themselves, whilst its insubstantialness is the main culprit for the speed at which the Jaffa cakes disappear.”

I couldn’t have put it better myself.

So there you go you two. Jaffa cakes and fruit shoots are basically things to bribe small children with.
